Nectar Eating Birds

There are some 16 different species of hummingbirds that migrate to the USA every spring. However, only one, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird resides in the eastern half during the summer. These are amazing birds. They migrate up from Central America and Mexico over the Gulf of Mexico into Texas. The trip over the 600 mile Gulf is, of course, nonstop, so when they arrive in Texas, some say they literally “fall” from the sky for a well deserved rest. Then they migrate up to our hummingbird birdfeeders throughout the east. They weigh only three grams, have extremely strong body muscles for their size that allows them to hover, dart around and even fly backwards.

In order to attract them to your yard, it’s important to use a high quality nectar birdfeeder that does not leak, is easy to clean, has perches and is red. Research shows that hummingbirds are attracted to red. Further, they will perch on the birdfeeder to feed which gives you a better opportunity to watch them. We offer hummingbird birdfeeders that meet all of these requirements and more. If you wish to make your own nectar, use four parts water to one part sugar. Bring it to a brief boil to thoroughly dissolve the sugar and store in the refrigerator.
