Tube Feeders

Tube bird feeders are for the small "perching” birds such as chickadees, titmice, finch, siskins, redpolls, small woodpeckers, and more. If you attach a tray on the bottom, you can attract the “ground feeding birds” such as cardinals, grosbeak, doves, jays, blackbirds and others. 

These bird feeders are designed to replace branches, bushes, etc where these birds often feed. The tube represents the trunk of the tree, the perches substitute for the branches, and the holes in the feeder represent the seed pods. Most of the time you should hang these bird feeders on branches, shepherd hooks or deck hangers near your birdbath. Larger tube bird feeders can be mounted on a pole or post. If squirrels are an issue, we suggest you purchase a squirrel proof bird feeder that will stop these rascals. Another approach is the pole or hanging baffle (see baffle section). There are two kinds of tube feeders; (1) finch bird feeders (with small slits in the tube) that hold thistle (nyjer) and, (2) open port tube feeders (with round holes in the tube) that hold sunflower seed, sunflower hearts (recommended), safflower, etc. and will attract most other perching birds.
