While platform feeders will attract perching (finch chickadees, titmice, etc.) and clinging birds (woodpeckers, nuthatches, etc.), their primary purpose is to attract ground feeding birds such as cardinals, grosbeaks, doves and others.  “Ground” feeding birds don't mean that they only feed on the ground.  Rather, their feet are such that they want a flat surface. The platform feeder meets that need. The larger the platform, the more birds you’ll get. Since ground feeding birds feed on a variety of seeds in the field, we recommend that you place a good blend in these feeders.
