Do You Know

suet should be offered in the summer?

Suet is no longer used only during the winter months.  Rather, rendered suet is now processed to have a 150 degree melting point for summer feeding without dripping or making a mess.

If you offer suet in the summer, you will invite chickadees, wrens, woodpeckers, nuthatches and several other birds to your yard.  Further, you may have the opportunity to observe Red-bellied Woodpeckers, among other birds, as they bring their young to your feeders during the summer to teach them how to feed.

Hang your suet feeder at the end of a tree branch inside the "drip line".  This will provide shade, yet it can be more easily seen than if you hang it near the trunk.  If starlings or jays are a problem, consider an upside-down suet feeder.  Woodpeckers feed quite comfortably hanging underneath the feeders; however, starlings have more difficulty taking the suet.  We invite you to review our wide selection of suet feeders and read more about their use.
